Restaurant design

Döner kebab fast food restaurant

Project description

As a group we were tasked to design a Döner kebab restaurant. The clients inspiration for the restaurant is to open a restaurant that caters for the younger audience after a night out with friends. There is no colour scheme, theme or branding only a concept. The client gave us creative freedom for the design and branding. The requirements of the brief was that we incorporate South African, Turkish and German elements. The main focus on the restaurant should be the services counter where there is a clear ordering and collecting system. Another requirement of the client was that we add a condiment station with a wash hand basin since the restaurant is a fast food style restaurant. The design of the restaurant has to be fun and interesting. The client also requested that we design a food truck.

Design rationale

Spin and Spice presents an exciting fusion of Turkish-German culinary traditions, translated into a South African context. As societal dynamics evolve, our culinary venture delivers a refreshing take on fast food - one that champions healthiness without compromising authenticity. This ethos guided the creation of an interior space that seamlessly marries aesthetics with purpose.
Our design narrative reflects an ethos that is both chic and inviting. We’ve meticulously crafted an environment that not only captures current trends but also beckons patrons with its warmth. Drawing inspiration from Turkish, German, and South African design sensibilities, our vision is a harmonious blend of contemporary aesthetics and textured nuances.
In crafting our ambiance, we were mindful of achieving equilibrium. Striving to avoid the common pitfall of overwhelming patterns and colors, our space maintains a sense of simplicity and ease upon entry. This balance ensures a tranquil yet stimulating atmosphere, allowing the culinary journey to take center stage.
To modernize the space, strategic placement of bold colors and patterns was imperative. A defining hue emerged - yellow, a symbolic tie to the trio of cultures we celebrate. This vibrant shade takes on a focal role, standing out against a backdrop of diverse materials such as stone, metal, and wood. Our choice of mid-toned melawood serves as a harmonious counterpoint to the industrial edge of the grey concrete walls. Complementing this juxtaposition, matt black metal lighting fixtures impart a sense of urban sophistication, resonating with both concrete and wood elements.
Intricately selected patterns subtly evoke African influences, adding a local touch to the ambiance. An enigmatic black-painted brick wall serves as a canvas for an artwork crafted by a South African talent - an ode to our commitment to fostering local artistry. These patterns infuse vibrancy, in harmony with South African design traditions.
The franchise’s name, Spin and Spice, becomes a design language in itself. Curvaceous patterns flow across surfaces, echoing the motion implied by the name. This dynamic energy is embodied in the undulating lines gracing the wash hand basin wall, further accentuated by wavy wooden slats that artfully divide the kitchen and seating areas.
Mindful of the brief’s emphasis on natural materials, wood emerges as a pivotal element. From furniture to screens, this choice imparts a sense of luxury, aligning with our desire to provide patrons with a premium experience.
Our space is more than just visually appealing; it’s a canvas that cultivates sensations of hunger, joy, and community. Enhanced by warm lighting, captivating patterns, immersive murals, and vibrant splashes of color, our interior design aims to elevate the dining experience at Spin and Spice. Our aspiration is for our design to not only satiate culinary cravings but to elevate every customer’s journey, transforming each kebab experience into an unforgettable memory.
